Photo Hatchback 16L AW is rated out of 5 by 11.Rated 5 out of 5 by FlexGunship from A surprising versatile bag Hiking and photography have both been back-seat hobbies I've had for a while. As I've scaled up my hiking adventures, I've done the same with my photography. As such, I went out and purchased this bag at a local retailer. I'll start by saying that I've been wildly impressed at every turn. Carrying the bag is easy and comfortable even when full. I didn't even know the various features when I first purchased the bag; I got it home and found the camera compartment was removable; I discovered the all-weather wrap tucked in the bottom; and I stumbled across the interior zippered compartment (a must-have if you want to feel secure bringing your car keys on a hike). Unfortunately, there are two draw backs: 1 - Apart from very small ones, there is no way to carry a tripod. The side pockets are just too small to be practical for this. They're great for carrying water bottles, but you'll need to find another way to carry anything but the tiniest of travel tripods (even my notoriously compact Manfrotto MKC3-H01 won't fit). To remedy this, I added a few aftermarket straps. 2 - The camera compartment, thought handy and very well protected, is not exactly a "quick-draw." I found myself having the tendency to hold on to the camera more and more to keep from having to put it away and pull it out again. That being said, keep in mind that there aren't many other alternatives in this area. Keeping the camera safe while stored is priority number one and this is a fantastic solution. As a bonus, if you use this pack in an urban setting, having your camera stolen is essentially impossible. Short of burrowing through your stomach to get to it, thieves will not have access to your camera while you're wearing the pack. This is in contrast to other storage methods which expose the camera compartment outwardly. There are so many upsides to this bag. I'm now confident that there are no significant competitors to it for general outdoor use. It's minor shortcomings are vastly outweighed by it's amazing design. After owning this bag for two weeks, I was so impressed by the Lowepro product that when I saw the Photo Sport 200 AW in a retail store, I bought it on the spot without thinking. I now use the Hatchback 16L for general carrying (around town, friends' houses, short hikes, etc), and use the Photo Sport for day-long hikes. As a combo these two cover every situation.Date published: 2013-09-18Rated 4 out of 5 by navyguy from Great daypack...if you get the correct size. I purchased this pack for a trip to the beach but had a problem with my gear. I shoot a Canon 70D with a EF-S 15-85mm lens but the fit in this pack was just too tight. After I squeezed it in, I didn't have room enough for a couple of other lenses that I wanted to carry. If you have one of the Rebel series cameras with the kit lens of one of the newer mirrorless cameras this pack would be perfect. I returned the pack and purchased the 22L and my gear fit perfectly. I'm 6'5" tall and this pack fit me perfectly. Seems to hug the body and not move around as you walk. The quality is there (as you'd expect from Lowepro) and your gear will be well protected. Really good backpack!Date published: 2014-05-13Rated 4 out of 5 by JoeTheFlow from Good but not for me Let's start with the good. This bag is extremely comfortable. The padding on the back and the straps makes this bag easy to wear, especially in hot weather. You gear is well protected. And it's a great bag around less than ideal weather. The not so good - it's small. This is the wrong bag for me, who needs easy and quick access to my camera throughout the day. Since the access to the camera is on the back, I have to take the entire bag off and set it down to get access to my gear. There is a large compartment on the top of the bag but It's not padded so I don't feel safe putting my camera in there. Also, the gear compartment is small, for me. Like I said, for me this bag isn't ideal but it's a great bag. If you're carry a GoPro set up or a 3/4 or small DSLR this would be a good day trip bag.Date published: 2013-09-16Rated 5 out of 5 by Elaineaway from Great little backpack! I bought this bag to function as a carry-on bag and a small day pack for hikes when I travel, although I'm sure I'll use it for much more. It came just in time for my trip to Costa Rica and I wasn't disappointed. My equipment that fit: camera (Canon Rebel T3i with kit lens), 55-250 lens, battery charger in the lower section, extra SD card in it's little holder. I can't imagine much more fitting but I'm a rookie at configuring these things. I found the drawstring pouch on top of this section annoying but it easily can be slid back against itself to stay out of the way. I may want it in other situations so I'm glad it's available. The outside pocket has a divider. My netbook (13" screen if measured from the inside edge diagonally) fit easily in the one slot and the power cord in the other. I felt it was well protected on the inner pocket. The upper section was roomy enough for snacks, a book, raincoat or fleece, etc. I always want more space, but hate to carry more weight than I have to so it kept me in check. I struggled a bit about which size to get but this smaller one ended up being sufficient. Other features: Although I never needed it for this trip, I love that it has the built-in rain cover. The water bottle holders don't hold the typical 32oz Nalgene bottles, but smaller ones fit just fine. I bet you could fit a small hydration system bladder in that computer pocket if you really wanted but the tubing would have to just come out of the zippered part. Waist belt was helpful on the hikes. It seems to be solid in it's construction and I expect it to be very durable. No problems fitting under the seat on the airport. It would have been nice to have a few places on the back to snap on a few things like the ones on the shoulder straps. It worked though. I've never had a backpack with the side access for the camera so having it against my back wasn't traumatic for me. I could actually still access is (although not quickly) while it was still on me (I have flexible shoulders) to remove my camera, but not to replace it. I like that the lower camera case is removable so if I want to use the pack for other uses, I'm not stuck with packing non-camera stuff into this section. There's a divider between this lower section and the upper that can be detached so that you have one big open compartment if needed. Such a versatile little bag! If you don't need much space, you'll love it!Date published: 2014-02-11Rated 5 out of 5 by backpackin from perfect small camera pack I love this pack! Travelled with it, recently - safely stowes my camera, just enough room to travel (lightly) for a couple days, extra pockets for batteries, and personal stuff, rain cover worked great in light rain. My fellow travellers were jealous.Date published: 2013-12-06Rated 5 out of 5 by Greg from An excellent bag I bought the bag several days ago from a third party retailer and I loved it. The design was good, it was comfortable to carry, the bag looked good and was functional. Unfortunately, in my case I simply had too much gear for the 16L and I regrettably had to return it. I think the 22L would have been tight as well so I ordered the Transit 350 AW and hopefully that'll do it. I would definitely recommend the bag though. I liked it a lot and felt something like "returner's remorse" (as opposed to buyers remorse) when I had to return it. :(Date published: 2014-03-05Rated 5 out of 5 by Brookepw from Incredible Bag, Except... I absolutely love this bag. I have the "pepper red" color (which - don't be deceived by the name - is really more of an orange). It's comfortable and well designed to fit a camera as well as a handful of other things you may need while traveling. My Surface tablet fits comfortably in the front pocket and there is plenty of room in the top pocket for snacks, a light jacket, etc. Everything is so well designed. I couldn't say enough good things about the bag. My one rub - is that my 75-300mm lens does NOT fit in the camera compartment. Granted, this is a pretty long lens - about 5 1/2 inches; but it is a real disappointment as it will make taking it with me cumbersome. It fits snugly in the side holders (where you could put a water bottle) - but if it rains, one would have to be very mindful of the exposure the lens would have. Overall - great bag; best on the market for sure. I would recommend to anyone. But definitely be mindful of the bag's limitations. The camera compartment is not meant for tons of equipment and is not big enough for long/large lenses.Date published: 2014-02-19Rated 5 out of 5 by NYTim from ergonomic design I have "issues" my neck. My trusty shoulder bag was not good for me posture while walking and shooting pics. My camera, Olympus E-30, is quite heavy. Wearing this pack whilst walking around has been a dream for me. While not easy access, it is certainly theft proof. A great bargain as far as I am concerned.Date published: 2014-06-21
