Reviews
Flipside 500 AW (Black) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from A redesign required I have only had this bag less than a week and find it adequate and the most comfortable. of any I have owned. However I have already lost one of the chest straps because of the well intentioned but in my opinion badly designed attachment of the straps to the bag by means of a claw type clip that runs over a beading strip inserted in the bag. Major problem this beading strip has nothing top or bottom end to stop the claw attachment coming off the beading hence I have had to return the bag as spare strips etc are not available. When I get my replacement bag I intend to sew a button or something similar to stop the straps sliding off their anchorage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Bag that accommodates many lenses This is one of the very versatile bags developed by Lowepro and is very easy and convenient to operate due to its Flipside Design. The bag accommodates almost 4-5 lenses, speedlites, two DSLR bodies. You can pack 300mm or 400mm lens attached with body in this bag. Very spacious. At the same time it has a tripod carry feature also. The weather jacket makes the bag versatile for nature & wildlife photographers. The flipside design gives access to gears when the bag is on your waist only and not put down. There are some other compartments and pockets that carry lots of batteries, memory cards, chargers, cells, cards and many other accessories.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great bag with some minor issues After using a Slingshot 202 AW for over a year for events and walking around town, I decided I needed a larger pack for travel and when getting more gear to a destination was a little more important than the quick, light package the Slingshot offered. I opted for the Flipside 500 AW over some of the more outdoor-oriented packs (Rover Pro, Flipside Sport, etc.), looking for something that would be as versatile as possible. The bag has delivered on versatility and then some! Within the first week, I found myself cramming it with 2 DSLRS with grips, speedlites, and 4 lenses, as well as 2 tripods attached to the exterior to hike up a mountain to take some engagement shots for a buddy (when I say hike, I really mean it...plus a short rappel to reach the ledge where I took the photos as the couple finished a climb). Despite my efforts to overload the pack, it felt solid and comfortable throughout the hike and has ever since. The stitching, padding, exterior fabric, and overall build quality have me believing this thing will be around for years to come, whether or not I'm super kind to it. Inside, the ability to customize and readjust the padded dividers has been excellent as my gear inventory grows or changes for each outing. I don't always use it, but the ability to keep the hipbelt buckled and spin the pack around to access gear is greatly appreciated when I'm on the hiking trail or even on wet pavement. Rear gear access helps ease my mind when walking through crowded areas like airports and downtown districts. The front pocket swallows up any packs of extra batteries, snacks, a rain jacket, or anything else I may need for the day--I generally stick my netbook in there when going through the airport for easy access at security. One qualm with the pack is that its hipbelt rides abnormally high when I wear it. I'm 5'9", so an abnormally long torso isn't to blame here, it's just the slightly shorter height of the pack that puts the hipbelt more toward the middle of my stomach. The belt still works to keep the load near your back and stabilize it over uneven terrain, but it's not shifting any of the weight to your hips. Theoretically, this could create a greater chance of shoulder discomfort, but I've never felt any as the padding and shoulder straps seem to do their job quite well. Another issue I've encountered, but have a hard time being upset about is the rain cover. It's absolutely awesome to have it integrated and always with you, but it's unusable if you have a tripod on the pack. When the rain starts, you're faced with the decision to go without the cover or to carry your tripod separately to get out of the rain. I can't think of a great design solution to this limitation, though, and I've only encountered it once--it's a small nitpick at a good pack. Overall, this is a great and versatile pack that allows you to transport and access a bevy of gear quite comfortably. For me, that translates into less time worrying about where things are and more time behind the camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Pack Needing a new and larger pack this pack was surprisingly comfortable. The flipside entry for the main compartment took a little getting used to but like the concept more and more as I use the 500 AW. My only nitpic is the depth. I feel for most Camera items they're better secured in a shallower compartment. Little to much movement if you have to flip the pack over, smaller items tend to flop one side to the other as you do. Other than that. As expected it's an awesome design and well built.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome size and features I actually bought 2 of these bags, one for me and one for my 33 year old son. He has done well getting some equipment from me including an older Lowepro bag that was 15 years old. As he and I have acquired and updated equipment I thought it was time for a real bag to carry both of our equipment. I have to say I was blown away at the space in this bag. For me I have a couple Nikon DSLRs bodies, both FX and DX. Plus a few lens like a 150-600mm zoom, 80-200mm zoom and a few smaller lenses. I love the major space for the main body and the capacity to pack my 150-600 zoom lens, my 24-70 lens, my tripod, flash, extra SD cards, batteries, chargers, and more. This bag is sturdy and comfortable even with my Dolica Pro travel tripod. This has other pockets, cover for weather, and rugged enough to take anywhere. It was worth the price and the best bag(s) I have ever purchased. Thanks Lowepro! Phil

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this bag and bought a second. I love this bag as I feel my camera and lenses are safe when I'm in NYC as the opening is facing my back. The only problem I found is that the black colored faded to a reddish black after 2 years.

It appears that the Flipside 500 AW might accommodate this gear. IT may require some disassembly of the gimbal device.

I have a canon 80d w 18-135mm STM lens. I also carry 55-250mm, 10-22mm and 50mm lenses, and usually rent a 100-400mm for my vacations. Will this be big enough & accommodate my 15" macbook? Also, does it allow for quick access to the camera?

Asked by: kcrulez
The Flipside 500 AW does not have accommodation for your laptop. You might want to consider our Pro Runner BP 450 AW II.

Flipside 500AW

I have just purchased the 400AW and it is not big enough for my equipment, I have a canon EOS5D with Grip, a 24-105L and 100-400L zoom lenses plus other bits, Ideally I would like the bag to be carry on compliant but the 500AW does not appear to be so. If I purchased the 500AW would it still go in overhead lockers as the dimensions of this are smaller than the Pro Trekker 400,
Asked by: andyconcorde
Most airlines restrict carry-on bags to a total of 45 inches, adding the height, width and depth. The Lowepro 500AW is 44.69 inches total, so it should be accepted. However, airlines do vary and change their rules all the time, so you should check with them before you fly.
